National Safety Recall - Sept. 17

The Consumer Product Safety Commission posted a batch of more than a dozen recalls and safety warnings, including 195,000 heated blankets tied to 53 burn injuries, 276,000 toddler toys with a deadly choking defect, and magnetic toys that have already sent two children to the hospital.

🚩 JKMAX heated blankets and heating pads — 53 burn injuries

This is the standout recall today. About 195,000 JKMAX heated blankets and heating pads sold through Amazon are being recalled because their internal heating wires can overheat. JKMAX has received 577 reports of smoking, melting or burning products and 53 reports of burn injuries. The products were sold from September 2022 through July 2026. 🚩 276,000 Esjay toddler busy boards — deadly choking hazard

Esjay US is recalling approximately 276,000 Montessori-style toddler busy boards because red knobs can detach. Because the boards are intended for children under age 3, the detachable pieces violate the federal small-parts ban and pose a potentially fatal choking hazard. (PR Newswire)

This is probably the strongest child-safety item in today's batch simply because of the number of toys involved.

🚩 Jerify magnetic stick-figure toys — two children hospitalized

About 38,507 Jerify Magnetic Humanoid Toy Sets sold on Amazon are recalled because high-powered magnets can come out of the figures. Swallowed magnets can attract one another through intestinal tissue, causing perforations, obstruction, blood poisoning and death.

This is not merely a theoretical hazard: two children swallowed magnets from the toys and both were hospitalized. Consumers should immediately take the toys away from children and obtain a refund. (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission)

🚩 Melissa & Doug fire-truck toys — choking hazard

Melissa & Doug is recalling about 84,000 Lights & Sounds Fire Truck Activity Boards, sold exclusively at Target stores and Target.com, because the fire-hose port can detach and become a choking hazard.

The company has received 26 reports of the part coming loose and one report of a minor cut. Affected toys were sold from July 2025 through August 2026. Consumers can choose a replacement, a $30 refund or a $40 Melissa & Doug store credit. (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission)

🚩 Sauna360 saunas — panels can short-circuit and burn

About 41,580 infrared and hybrid saunas and infrared kits sold under numerous brands including Finnleo, Helo, Radiant Health, Sauna360, Saunatec and Tylö are recalled because their infrared panels can short-circuit and overheat.

Sauna360 has received 67 reports of overheating, melting, charring or burning, although no injuries have been reported. Some units were sold at Costco and pool-and-spa dealers for $6,000 to $13,000. 🚩 Hayward pool heaters — carbon-monoxide poisoning

Hayward Industries is recalling about 4,600 HDFS400 Universal-HC Series 400,000-BTU pool heaters because they can produce dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide during operation.

CPSC warns that the defect can cause serious injury or death from CO poisoning. The heaters were sold nationwide from March through July 2026. Owners should stop using them and arrange a free in-home inspection and repair. (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission)

Also in today's CPSC batch are 10,605 Char-Broil Bistro Pro electric grills whose grounding connection can fail and create an electric-shock hazard; 5,451 Hererod jump starters/power banks tied to 16 fires and seven property-damage reports; and additional infant walkers, dressers, mattresses, pressure washers and bicycle helmets that violate federal safety standards. FDA: no new public recall announcement

FDA's main recall page still shows September 15 as its newest company-announcement date — the So Delicious frozen-dessert recall and the X10/biQ-FEL hidden-drug supplement recalls we covered yesterday. (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)

One newer food item is beginning to circulate outside FDA's main public-warning page: Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Applesauce, 23-ounce jars, UPC 04119005677, best-by June 16, 2027, is being recalled after FDA testing found elevated levels of the mold toxin patulin. It was sold through ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage and Fairway Market in several Northeastern states. No illnesses have been reported. (Good Housekeeping)

Another FDA enforcement item receiving attention involves roughly 2,700 cases of six Intercon/Laura Lynn/Summit/Vestis hand soaps potentially contaminated with Pseudomonas and Serratia bacteria. The recall itself began in June and FDA classified it Class II on September 11, so I would treat this as a catch-up item rather than a genuinely new recall. (People.com)
